RISING : DeAngelo Williams, RB, Carolina Panthers : If you look back at my comments from earlier in the preseason, I mentioned that although the Panthers selected Jonathan Stewart 13th overall Williams would be the starter come opening kick-off. In Williams first preseason game he rushed eight times for 55 yards and scored two touchdowns. If you missed the replay of the game on the NFL network, you missed a guy who is not about to give up his starting spot to anyone as he plowed through defenders. It was noted during the game that Williams changed his offseason work out, and that he came into camp wanting to learn more about the offense. I'll stick with my gut feeling here and say that Williams is the starter week one, and plays a big part in an Steve Smith'less offense. RISING : Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions : Calvin Johnson is going to be moving up plenty of Fantasy owners depth charts this preseason. In his first preseason game against the defending Super Bowl champs, Johnson caught four passes for 78 yards against the starting defense of the New York Giants. If Jon Kitna can stay healthy and come close to the 4,000 yard season he had over the past two years, expect great numbers once again for Johnson. RISING : Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore Ravens : You've seen the video and read the articles I've written so far on Ray Rice right? No? Well, let me recap them for you. Ray Rice is going to be an intragul part of the Ravens offense in 2008. With starting running back Willis McGahee out two to four weeks after knee surgery, Rice will get the bulk of the carries in preseason and have a chance to really make a name for himself. This is a guy you will see start to sneak into many Top 100 draft rankings. If you're going to carry McGahee on your Fantasy team this year, make sure to handcuff him with Rice. FALLING : Braylon Edwards, WR, Cleveland Browns : When you first look at this you're probably saying to yourself, “No way does Edwards fall.” Over the last few days since his unfortunate accident he's slipped almost 15 spots in several mock drafts. Those of you who drafted Edwards earlier in the month have been holding your breathe in hopes of a speedy recover. This is a situation that you'll have to watch closely after he makes his return in two weeks. My advice, don't be to worried about the foot, come the end of the season, you won't even remember the accident. FALLING : Bobby Engram, WR, Seattle Seahawks : This preseason, including my article on handcuffing your WR, I mentioned that Engram would be a great fit in deep leagues. Well, you can scratch that thought. Engram suffered a cracked bone in his shoulder last Friday and will miss six to eight weeks. Engram should be back after the Seahawks bye week, which is week four, and could be a guy you pick up for your RotoHog team in week four, and than cash in as others scramble to pick him up. FALLING : David Garrard, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars : David Garrard's top two WR's, Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams, have been injured this entire preseason. There is hope that each will be back in time for the opening game, but the question will be, will Garrard and his two receivers be on the same page. Over the last week Garrard has seen his Fantasy value drop to the 13th overall best QB in many mock drafts which could be an indication that many Fantasy owners really don't believe the hype from a year ago. |
Profile: Since high school, Paul has had a blast playing Fantasy Sports. The guy lives and breathes it. From the strategy on draft day, to making trades or working the waiver wire, he loves the fantasy game. What Paul hates are the fantasy experts who tell you what to do with your team, but don’t do the same thing on their fantasy teams. Paul wants to show you how he consistently wins his leagues and what he does to win them. Paul does not want to just write articles to tell you what you should do, he wants you to feel as though you are on his team. Paul is co-owner of Gotham Sports Media , Gotham Baseball Magazine and Gotham Sports Radio and is a Principle Engineer with General Dynamics in San Antonio, TX. Favorite Sport Baseball Sports Played: Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball Favorite covering sports moment: Getting to sit down and talk to Hall-of-Famer Duke Snider for two hours. We discussed the Brooklyn Dodgers day and their great teams, Jackie Robinson, and him being amongst the best OF'ers of his time. What a great man! If I was an athlete I would be like: Michael Jordan. This was a guy that took basketball to a whole new level. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were great for the NBA, but Jordan rose above the game and his influence can be seen in many of today's great players. CategoriesADVERTISEMENT
