Right now many of you have seen the ups and downs of the starting pitchers. For the select few who've owned the Webb's, Zambrano's and Wang's, congratulations, you're probably in the Top 100. Many of us however are probably struggling with our team pitchers due to many poor outings, injuries or lack of run production. So, what I thought I'd do is crunch some numbers to look under the hoods of some pitchers. I wanted to see if some of the below pitchers can help out your team. Here are the factors I took into consideration. Ron Shandler is the man when it comes to breaking down numbers. His theory's point out that if you use Walks/Innings Pitched (BB/9), Strike Outs/Innings Pitched (K/9) and Strike Outs/Walks (K/BB) you'll see a pitcher who has all the qualities of being valuable for your fantasy team. Lets look a little closer at the above three categories I just mentioned: BB/9 : Take a pitchers walks, multiply it by nine, then divide by the number of innings. You want to have a pitcher who rates are lower than 3.0. (Ex. Javier Vazquez has 11 walks in 46.3 innings pitched) K/9 : Take a pitchers strikes out, multiply it by nine, then divide by the number of innings. You want to have a pitcher who's rates are at a minimum of 5.6. Pitchers who boast a 7.0 are studs. (Ex. Javier Vazquez has 46 strike outs in 46.3 innings pitched) K/BB : This one is pretty straight forward, take the pitchers strike outs and divide that by the pitchers number of walks. Pitchers who have less than 2.0 will help your teams ERA and WHIP, but look for those stud pitchers who have a 3.0 or better.(Ex. Javier Vazquez has 46 strike outs and 11 walks)
I used Vazquez and an example of one of the better pitchers in Major League Baseball. Utilizing these numbers can help you decide on which pitcher at this point in time are pitching well. Aaron Harrang on the other hand who fits into all three categories, has had bad luck and low run production. We call this a bad luck pitcher. The numbers are there though and Harrang could be the pitcher you put on your watch list. Here is a list of 20 other pitchers who fit into the above formulas with the best possible numbers that could help your team possibly at a discounted price:

From the strategy on draft day, to making trades or working the waiver wire, he loves the fantasy game. What Paul hates are the fantasy experts who tell you what to do with your team, but don’t do the same thing on their fantasy teams. Paul wants to show you how he consistently wins his leagues and what he does to win them. Paul does not want to just write articles to tell you what you should do, he wants you to feel as though you are on his team. Paul is co-owner of Gotham Sports Media , Gotham Baseball Magazine and Gotham Sports Radio and is a Principle Engineer with General Dynamics in San Antonio, TX. Paul is also the voice of RotoHog.com and has appeared on ESPN Radio, WIP in Philadelphia, and KALL 700 Sports in Salt Lake City. Born: Amityville, NY -- Yes, that's right the same place as the horror show. Explains a lot huh? Favorite Sport Baseball Sports Played: Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball Favorite covering sports moment: Getting to sit down and talk to Hall-of-Famer Duke Snider for two hours. We discussed the Brooklyn Dodgers day and their great teams, Jackie Robinson, and him being amongst the best OF'ers of his time. What a great man! If I was an athlete I would be like: Michael Jordan. This was a guy that took basketball to a whole new level. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were great for the NBA, but Jordan rose above the game and his influence can be seen in many of today's great players. CategoriesADVERTISEMENT
