A Wednesday look around the league has Fantasy Players coming back off of injuries, players that are hot, and those that are not. Now is the time to either jump on the wave or know when to get off of it. As always price matters, so spend your money wisely. As we get closer to June, now should be the time where you make your move(s). These next few weeks could make or break your team.
—CF Adam Jones extended his hitting streak to six games as he got a career-best four hits and a career-high four RBIs Tuesday against the Yankees. His average was boosted to .265, up from .223 on May 13. Jones is an excited rookie player. He has made it through his first slump, and could be a decent pickup now that he's turned it around. —RHP Daniel Cabrera continued his string of outstanding starts with a five-hit, two-run, seven-inning stint against the Yankees. The team's leader in walks for the past two years was walk-free for the third time this season as he upped his record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.48 with his eighth consecutive quality start. Ummm, contract year for Cabrera has sparked something inside. Cabrera is still a matchup pitcher, so be cautious with him. —RHP Justin Verlander picked up a win last night which is good news for Fantasy Owners. Verlander hasn't had the run support he's had in the past, and hopes are that last night's performance by the Tigers is a sign of things to come. —CF Curtis Granderson is another Tiger who might have broken out of a prolonged slump as he hit an RBI double and a two-run home run. He was only 7-for-45 over the last two weeks. Granderson still isn't out of the slump, but is a player you want on your watch list. —SS Derek Jeter left Tuesday's game after the third inning with a bruised left hand after getting hit by a pitch by Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera. X-rays were negative, but this is something you want to keep an eye on. Stay close to you PC, and make sure you have the facts before playing him tonight. —RHP Felix Hernandez, who left Sunday's game against the Padres with a slight right calf injury, isn't expected to miss any time. Hernandez's next start is scheduled for Saturday in Yankee Stadium. This shouldn't affect Hernandez too much, but a start against the Yankees does. Sit or sell him this week. —2B Aaron Hill went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. Over that stretch, he is batting .379 (11-for-29). Finally!!! Hill, if you look at his numbers from a year ago, is a second tier second baseman. A cheap player who can allow you to shuffle your money elsewhere. —RHP Micah Owings struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings in a 3-2 loss at Florida on Tuesday. Owings' previous high was nine, set when he went 6 2/3 innings in an 8-1 victory over Colorado in his first start of the season April 4. Owings made his seventh quality start in his nine outings. QS are always a good indication of how a pitcher is pitching. Owings right now is hot, and you need to jump on the band wagon now so you can enjoy his success. —2B Orlando Hudson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-hit game, his fifth multi-hit game in that stretch. Not as excited about him as I am of Hill, but Hudson is a player that won't hurt your team. —INF Mark DeRosa extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games. DeRosa entered the game having scored at least one run in 10 consecutive games. Why is this guy still a role player? DeRosa is a guy who should at least be on your bench. He plays multiple positions and can help when your stars are on their off day. —LF Adam Dunn had RBIs in eight consecutive games (13 RBIs), but the streak ended Tuesday. He also had home runs in five consecutive games this past week. Dunn is streaky no doubt about it. When this guy is hot, though, watch out. —SS Hanley Ramirez struck out three times and walked once in four plate appearances Tuesday. His batting average fell to .304. Ramirez is 1-for-15 with 10 strikeouts in the first four games. Hmmm, new contract, no worries, equals lower numbers in my opinion. Ramirez is one of the best, but as the player goes so does the team. See the Marlins last two weeks of play. —RF Hunter Pence, remember him? The guy has had a 16 game hitting streak this season, but is still getting no attention. He's back Fantasy Owners, jump on the band wagon now. —LHP Cole Hamels tossed seven scoreless innings Tuesday night, extending his career-high streak to 19 innings without allowing a run. Doing this in launch pad in Philly makes it that much more impressive. Hamels is a clear ace, and a must start each outing. —1B Ryan Howard struck out three times Tuesday to raise his season total to 68 whiffs in 169 at-bats. Hey Ryan we are still waiting for you to break out. Say it with me Fantasy Owners, maybe we can help him break out, “Howard the home run king, please break out, your killing my team. Thank you.” —RHP Tim Lincecum is 4-0 this season when pitching after a Giants loss. Since that's the case, Lincecum will be 30-0 by the end of the year, because I'm sure each time out he'll be pitching after a loss. —OF Ryan Ludwick, who had been 22-for-55 (.400) for May with eight homers, was held to one walk in four plate appearances. Profile: Since high school, Paul has had a blast playing Fantasy Sports. The guy lives and breathes it. From the strategy on draft day, to making trades or working the waiver wire, he loves the fantasy game. What Paul hates are the fantasy experts who tell you what to do with your team, but don’t do the same thing on their fantasy teams. Paul wants to show you how he consistently wins his leagues and what he does to win them. Paul does not want to just write articles to tell you what you should do, he wants you to feel as though you are on his team. Paul is co-owner of Gotham Sports Media , Gotham Baseball Magazine and Gotham Sports Radio and is a Principle Engineer with General Dynamics in San Antonio, TX. Paul is also the voice of RotoHog.com and has appeared on ESPN Radio, WIP in Philadelphia, and KALL 700 Sports in Salt Lake City. Paul, is also a highly decorated veteran of the United States Air Force for 10 years served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Northern Watch, and Operation Southern Watch. Born: Amityville, NY -- Yes, that's right the same place as the horror show. Explains a lot huh? Favorite Sport Baseball Sports Played: Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball Favorite covering sports moment: Getting to sit down and talk to Hall-of-Famer Duke Snider for two hours. We discussed the Brooklyn Dodgers day and their great teams, Jackie Robinson, and him being amongst the best OF'ers of his time. What a great man! If I was an athlete I would be like: Michael Jordan. This was a guy that took basketball to a whole new level. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were great for the NBA, but Jordan rose above the game and his influence can be seen in many of today's great players. CategoriesADVERTISEMENT
