The first week of the Major League Baseball season is always one of my busiest e-mailing weeks. For some reason people want to jump ship from their teams and wait for next year. My word of advice, let the first month play out and than make your decision. Today, I'm going to share with you some of the e-mails I've received over the last couple days of Fantasy Owners wondering what to do. The names will changed to protect the innocent. This first e-mail comes from John: “Apr 1 1B Prince Fielder, who became the youngest player to swat 50 home runs last season at 23, hit just one homer in 75 plate appearances in spring training. This is not a good sign. I took him as my 1st round pick at 13. Then I picked Crawford at 2.01. Now I am regretting this move, since I did not anticipate Fielder dropping to me at 1.13. I think I should have taken Crawford at 1.13 and Sizemore at 2.01. I didn't even bother to read up on Fielder that he is now a vegetarian and this will probably hurt his HRs! Any suggestions”? Prince Fielder is a beast. I don't believe he'll hit the same amount of HR's this year as he did last year, but 40-45 HR's is respectable. Why would you be worrying about any player after two games? The number one rule of Fantasy Baseball, to have fun. Don't worry about a guy because he's now a vegetarian. Meat or no meat, this guy is for real. The second e-mail comes from Rich: “What the heck is going on with Eric Gagne? I see the same crap I saw with the Red Sox last year. When he gets it through his rock head that his fastball is now only his third best pitch he might be effective again. The guy is making $10 mil, but should I look at the second tier closer for him”. RotoHog players, stay away from Gagne. There are better relief pitchers out there that can help your team. The Brewers wouldn't have paid him $10 million if they didn't think he could close. I think you'll see some rocky times from him. Look at what Todd Jones and Joe Borowski did last year. If you're in a 5x5 league, or any league that counts saves, than that's what matters. Here at RotoHog, there is a little more at stake. There are several pitching categories you have to keep in mind, so a relief pitcher like Gagne to me, at this point is not worth picking up. The last e-mail I'll share comes from a jay-jay, RotoHog member: “The whole pitching thing is new to me. What do you feel is the best way to handle this? With the 5days and all, there has to be a better way to handle this"... How you handle your pitchers this year will be key. I think a great way to handle this is to keep track of those pitchers that will have two starts in a week. There are plenty of resources out there where you can find this information. Think of yourself as the pitching coach. You want to be able to maximize your pitchers without having to sacrifice your teams stats. Over the course of the season I'll be sharing more of these e-mails with all of you. I think they have great lessons in each of them. Remember RotoHog Fantasy Owners, we're less than a week into the season. Make your daily moves, but don't get hung up on the fact that your team didn't get off to a hot start. This game is all about adjustments |
Profile: Since high school, Paul has had a blast playing Fantasy Sports. The guy lives and breathes it. From the strategy on draft day, to making trades or working the waiver wire, he loves the fantasy game. What Paul hates are the fantasy experts who tell you what to do with your team, but don’t do the same thing on their fantasy teams. Paul wants to show you how he consistently wins his leagues and what he does to win them. Paul does not want to just write articles to tell you what you should do, he wants you to feel as though you are on his team. Paul is co-owner of Gotham Sports Media , Gotham Baseball Magazine and Gotham Sports Radio and is a Principle Engineer with General Dynamics in San Antonio, TX. Paul is also the voice of RotoHog.com and has appeared on ESPN Radio, WIP in Philadelphia, and KALL 700 Sports in Salt Lake City. Listen to him every on the weekly Internet show, Talking Baseball, every Wednesday night at 8pm ET. Paul, is also a highly decorated veteran of the United States Air Force for 10 years served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Northern Watch, and Operation Southern Watch. Born: Amityville, NY -- Yes, that's right the same place as the horror show. Explains a lot huh? Favorite Sport Baseball Sports Played: Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball Favorite covering sports moment: Getting to sit down and talk to Hall-of-Famer Duke Snider for two hours. We discussed the Brooklyn Dodgers day and their great teams, Jackie Robinson, and him being amongst the best OF'ers of his time. What a great man! If I was an athlete I would be like: Michael Jordan. This was a guy that took basketball to a whole new level. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were great for the NBA, but Jordan rose above the game and his influence can be seen in many of today's great players. CategoriesADVERTISEMENT
