2008 All-Injured Team

paul greco · June 13th, 2008

As I was sitting at my laptop looking over stats for this upcoming weekends Inter-League matchups, I couldn't help the frustration that was mounting over the number of injured Fantasy Baseball stars. So instead of the usual 3 Up /3 Down this week, I thought I'd give you my All-Injured Team.

Victor Martinez – Catcher : Victor Martinez is the latest casualty, and the newest member of the team. With elbow inflammation, Martinez is going under the knife to relieve some of the pressure. This season hasn't been a typical season for Martinez, zero homeruns, but his average was helping many Fantasy Owners. Martinez will be out for sometime, and when he returns, because it's the elbow, don't look for much power...which we haven't seen at all from him this season.

Albert Pujols – First Baseman : Many thought prior to the season that it was going to be the elbow that was going to blow for Albert Pujols. So far this season, Pujols' elbow has held up fine, and his statistics (.347/16 HR's/42 RBI) show that he was once again going to make a run at the National League MVP. A bad swing and trouble getting out of the box strained his calf, and he's now sitting on your bench for the next three weeks. Since it is his push leg, make sure to see how fast he recovers, and how well he swings once he returns.

Rickie Weeks – Second Baseman
: Oh Rickie you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my...FANTASY TEAM. Coming off of wrist surgery a year ago, having a full season to recover, many thought, including myself, that this would be the season we would see Rickie take off. A low batting average (.210), defensive problems, and now a sprained knee all but puts Weeks on the waiver wire. Bye-Bye- Rickie, see you next year.

Ryan Zimmerman – Third Baseman
: My man Ryan Zimmerman has been labeled, “The Nationals Savior.” Zimm has been anything but a savior early in his career. With a small labral tear in his left shoulder, many “Experts” feel as though Zimm's season is already lost. There is a lot of promise for this young kid, I just don't think it's going to be this season.

Rafael Furcal – Shortstop : The million dollar question for Rafael Furcal is when will he return to the Dodgers lineup? Several weeks ago he was saying he going to return with no minor league rehab games giving his Fantasy Owners hopes. Look where we are now. Reports are coming out that he might be out a couple more weeks with that lower back strain which has put his owners into panic mode. Furcal was having an MVP type season before the injury, batting .366 with five homeruns, 16 RBI, and eight stolen bases. All we can do now is wait until he's finally in the lineup.

Alfonso Soriano – Outfielder : Poor Alfonso Soriano. Can this guy ever get a break? I don't mean bone break either. Soriano was finally starting to come on after slumping all of April and parts of May, five homeruns and 14 RBI over his last 21 days. With a broken left ring finger he's now going to rot on many benches for four to six weeks. Luckily in RotoHog you can cut your loses and look for another outfielder; one of the many perks in the RotoHog Fantasy Baseball game.

Josh Willingham – Outfielder : Josh Willingham seems to get hurt every season. The problem Fantasy Owners have with him is when he's in the lineup the kid produces. In his 25 games with the Marlins, Willingham was batting .341/6 HR's/ 16 RBI. In RotoHog, the kid was a bargain basement type of player. It's kind of hard though to swing a bat when you have lower back soreness.

Andruw Jones – Outfielder : I know many of you are thinking, “Why have Jones on this list, the guy is a horrible Fantasy Owner.” True, true,. Coming into this season, many Fantasy Owners were talking about the change of scenery, and how that would help Jones, but it hasn't, so he makes the list. Jones is hitting .165 which is not what the Dodgers envisioned when they signed him to a two-year contract. Now out with a Meniscus tear in his right knee, I don't think the numbers will change once Jones makes it back onto to the field, let alone have any impact on any team.

David Ortiz - Designated Hitter : I will not pretend to be a doctor here, but Ortiz has a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. No idea what a sheath is, but if it's torn, it must be bad. At the time of the injury Ortiz was finally starting to come out of his early season slump. Now, with any wrist injury to a batter, warning signs must go up. I've mentioned on Talking Baseball Live numerous times that any batter that has a wrist injury needs at least a year to recovery: see Ryan Zimmerman this year (off season wrist injury) – Derrek Lee and Rickie Weeks last year. When Big Pappi comes back off the DL, I'd watch him for a few weeks before determining whether or not he should be on your Fantasy Team.

John Smoltz - Starting Pitcher : This was a toss up between John Smoltz and Dice-K. Smoltz though is done for the year, and possibly his career, so he wins out. If you look at what Smoltz had done up to the point his shoulder gave out, he was having a nice Fantasy season (3-2 2.57 ERA 1.18 WHIP). With Smoltz gone, and now Tom Glavine out, the Braves are looking at the bottom half of that National League East. Even though I'm a Mets fan, I always liked to see John Smoltz pitch. If this is his last season, five years from now we'll all be talking about him walking into the Hall-of-Fame.

Eric Gagne – Closer : I'll now go from one future Hall-of-Famer to a quitter, and say Eric Gagne is a mess. Check this out. Gagne is making $10 million to be over weight (a nice term for fat), give up homeruns each game he enters, and quit on his team. Man, this is a guy I want on my Fantasy Team. Now the worst news for me. I really thought he had a chance to turn things around with the Brewers coming into the '08 season. Gagne is a mess now and has right rotator cuff tendinitis and is still weeks away from returning to the bullpen. When he comes back, stay away until he gets himself a few saves without giving up monstrous jacks to the opposing hitters.

Many people are proclaiming the 2008 season, “The Season of the Injury.” So far, at least to me, it's been one of the most frustrating season in a long time.

As I mentioned above. The RotoHog game truly shows its colors when players end up on the DL, or worst, out for the season. With the ability to sell off a guy who's hurt, no other game gives you that luxury. Image if you owned these guys in your traditional league. If you do/did you're teams are suffering because they're not in your lineup. Thanks to RotoHog, you all can still compete for the BIG Prizes.

Who are some of the players that have gone on the DL you're frustrated with?

Favorite Sport Baseball

Sports Played: Baseball, Soccer, Football, Basketball

Favorite covering sports moment: Getting to sit down and talk to Hall-of-Famer Duke Snider for two hours. We discussed the Brooklyn Dodgers day and their great teams, Jackie Robinson, and him being amongst the best OF'ers of his time. What a great man!

If I was an athlete I would be like: Michael Jordan. This was a guy that took basketball to a whole new level. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were great for the NBA, but Jordan rose above the game and his influence can be seen in many of today's great players.
