Red, White & Blue

lina · July 3rd, 2008

It’s that time of year when we honor our Nations birth by blowing off parts of our hands with fireworks!  (That’s why I stick with the sparklers!)  Let us take a look at what is happening with sports through our Nations colors!

Red

Opponents of the Dallas Stars might be seeing red with their addition of free agent and known agitator Sean Avery!  On Wednesday, the club announced they signed Avery to a four year $15.5 million dollar contract.  The 28 year-old left winger tallied 15 goals, 18 assists and 154 penalty minutes in 57 games for the New York Rangers.   Avery said in a conference call after the announcement he is well aware of his reputation and said his experience with the Rangers has helped him mature.  “I like to push it to the edge, there’s no question about that.  And that’s how I play and that’s how I live.  And that’s what I am all about.  I think what I’ve done now is learned how to do it without hurting the team,” Avery said.  Really Sean?  Playing with the Rangers helped you mature?  Personally, I think it was the internship at Men’s Vogue Mag!

White

Seatle raised the white flag as they are finally surrendering the Super Sonics - the team that is but not the name. (Interesting to note that the color also portends a successful beginning.) Let’s hope it turns out that way for the Sonics as they start their new life in Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.  The club and the city came to a settlement which calls for owner Clay Bennett to pay something in the neighborhood of $75 million to the city of Seattle in exchange for the immediate termination of the KeyArena lease.  But the team's name and colors are staying put in Seattle.  What will their new name be?  Oklahoma Spokes?  The OK Cowboys?  Leave your ideas and comment below!

Blue

Brett Favre might be feeling the retirement blues!  A certain four letter network and a teammate are reporting Favre is feeling an “itch”.  Of course, the itch is referring to wanting to gear up for an 18th year of NFL action.  Favre’s former (or perhaps soon to be) teammate Al Harris said Favre had expressed interest in a return.  Favre told the media there was no reason for a return.  Deanna might disagree, perhaps Favre isn’t using a coaster on their antique table or something because the media is reporting his family is pushing for him to play.   Wouldn’t it be nice to see Favre ride off into the sunset with the Lombardi Trophy just one more time? Again comment below on Favre's waffling.
