The Rebel Alliance,* aka the Boston Red Sox players, decided to “strike” and not take the field Wednesday after finding out their managers, coaches and trainers weren’t going to receive the same $40,000 payments for their exhibition games in Tokyo, Japan. (* I figure if the Yankees are the Evil Empire, then the Bo-Sox are the Rebels Alliance, right?) Major League Baseball agreed to pay the staffers $20,000 and the Red Sox agreed to make up the difference. When all was said and done, the Red Sox players finally took the field vs. the Toronto Blue Jays one hour after the scheduled start time. What makes this a real story is the fact the game was nationally televised on ESPN and players with Oakland, who were also concerned about their staff, got the chance to see what Boston was doing and followed their lead. I was happy to a group of athletes looking out for someone other than themselves. It may be baby steps, but this handful of players rallied together and stuck up for their staffers. From striking to streaking. That’s right…“We’re going STREAKING!!!” There has been a lot of attention on streaking in the sports world as of late. And I don’t mean your cousin’s best friend running around the field sans clothes. No, I am taking about CONSECUTIVE WIN STREAKS. On Sunday Tiger Woods won his fifth consecutive PGA tour event in grand fashion. He sank a 25 foot putt for birdie on the last hole at Bay Hill to win the Arnold Palmer invitational. While this 5 event win streak is impressive, Tiger would still have to win 6 more events to tie the consecutive victories mark set by Byron Nelson! Keep on streaking Tiger! I would love to see you break the 63 year-old record! Speaking of breaking, the Houston Rockets winning streak came to an end on Tuesday when the Boston Celtics came into town. The Rockets were tackled by the “best team in the NBA” like a drunken hooligan streaker would get tackled by security at a soccer game! The Rockets were 11 games shy of matching the 33 straight wins of the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. Now, don’t think there aren’t any streaks to follow for baseball just because it’s the beginning of the season. David Wright will look to extend his hit streak to 18 games while Derek Jeter, Aaron Hill and Mark Loretta hope to hit for 16 consecutive games. Fausto Carmona and C.C. Sabathia will want to win their first start to extend their win streak to 6 games. While reliever Jason Isringhausen will hope for yet another save to reach 19 consecutive saves. So when opening day is underway, be on the lookout for these streakers—they’re family friendly and you wont have to avert your eyes! |
