lina · July 3rd, 2008

It’s that time of year when we honor our Nations birth by blowing off parts of our hands with fireworks!  (That’s why I stick with the sparklers!)  Let us take a look at what is happening with sports through our Nations colors!

Mullet Blog

lina · June 25th, 2008

Not only did the Tampa Bay Lightning get first round stud Steve Stamkos in the 2008 NHL draft but they also get a first rate mullet!  The Lightning announced Barry Melrose as their new head coach.  Melrose hasn’t held a coaching job since 1995, so many will be eager to see what he does.  I think they all will be secretly watching just to catch a glimpse of that magical salt-and-pepper mullet he sports.  Here are some other great mullets in sports history:

10.)  Don Majkowski
Before Brett Favre, there was a mullet playing on Lambeau Field in the form of Majkowski.  Legend has it the blonde mullet still haunts the sidelines of Lambeau Field trying to attach itself to someone for a chance to play on the field just one more time.  Aaron Rodgers, watch your back.

9.)  Dennis Eckersley
Arguably one of baseball’s great pitchers.  No argument about the mullet he maintained…it’s a classic for sure!

8.)  Larry Bird

Five Number 1's Please!

lina · June 16th, 2008

2007 Patrick Kane
The Chicago Blackhawks number one draft pick of 2007 was voted this year’s NHL rookie of the year. Patrick Kane edged out fellow line-mate Jonathan Toews for the Calder Trophy and become the first Chicago Blackhawks player to win the award since Ed Belfour took home the hardware in 1991. Kane led all rookies this season with 72 points in 82 games.

2006 Erik Johnson

Lord Stanley's Cup

lina · June 9th, 2008

A thunderous chant rises up; races like a tidal wave from one fan to another, spills over and echoes throughout the rafters above. “WE WANT THE CUP! WE WANT THE CUP! WE WANT THE CUP!” The Stanley Cup is the ultimate embodiment of a dream-come-true. To achieve this dream means your name will be etched onto a scared challis and forever be linked with hockey’s holiest of holies. The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy to compete for in North America and with age comes some pretty weird stories! It has been dented, stolen and has traveled to some unusual locations.

Lina's Lead Off...

lina · June 3rd, 2008

The election may be a couple months down the road, but your vote counts with me! Here is your chance to get caught up on the latest headlines in baseball and see if you are on the same wavelength with Rotohog Nation!

Manny's Memorable Moments
Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career homerun in the Red Sox win over the O’s Saturday night at Camden Yards. Remember this for trivia: it was a first pitch blast into right centerfield off of Chad Bradford. Now, this homerun may go down in the history books, but I still think the Manny hi-five is the kind of stuff baseball folklore is made of!

Which is moment more memorable? Comment below.
- Manny's Career HR #500?
- Manny hi-five’s his fans

Have a nice trip! See you next fall!

Stanley Cup Recap... So Far

lina · May 28th, 2008

The NHL has a dream match up for the Stanley Cup Finals this season. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Detroit Red Wings versus the young superstar team of the Pittsburgh Penguins. And this time, people are watching. Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals drew the highest-rated cable telecast of the championships in six years with 2.3 million viewers. Too bad only one team has showed up to the series so far.

Pittsburgh’s hope of speed and skill dominating the finals has been trumped by their youth and inexperience. The Red Wings have plenty of depth and experience to go around. Detroit has outscored Pittsburgh 7-0 and is out-shooting them 70-41.

It’s been called baseball’s greatest hit. And no matter what team or player you are a fan of, if you’re a true baseball lover, you’ll have agree! This year is the 100th anniversary of baseball’s greatest hit “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The song was copyrighted on May 2, 1908 and it has become a baseball tradition ever since! In fact, it is so much a part of Americana that many consider it the third most recognizable song from America. (Just behind “Happy Birthday to You” and the National Anthem.) For a good read, check out the book: Baseball's Greatest Hit: The Story of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Just think of how many times you have sung the song. Or think of how many people have tried Cracker Jacks just because of the song. (Mark up one for this girl!) Songs and sports go hand in hand. Here are some other songs out there that celebrate sports just like baseball’s greatest hit!

I am just not sure what the obsession is over the number five these days. Five dollar foot longs, other five dollar food deals and even a five dollar chef?!? Oh well, when in Rome. Here is my version of taking a five…

1) There isn’t one reason why the Tigers are struggling this season; there are many. Like their starting rotation boasting an AL worst 5.55 ERA and a 9-18 record. For you Tiger fans out there, I hope for your sake Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis are just having a case of the contract blues…all are signed to multi-year deals through the 2010 season. (Totaling $83.75 million, by the way.)

Blog Bloopers

lina · May 5th, 2008

Today we’re catching numbers 7-13. It’s easier than catching a dog that ran out onto the field during a Florida Marlins game, right Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson? Oh wait, you weren’t really trying to catch the dog, you were filming a movie! (That reminds me, I’m still mad at Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon for being on the field during the REAL Red Sox World Series win for Fever Pitch.)

#7) As in the 7 disposable razors Fredi Gonzalez distributed to his 7 relievers after the Florida Marlins April 30th loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. My last blog about facial hair must have struck a cord with Gonzalez. All the Marlins relievers were growing mustaches together but their Skipper put an end to it when the bullpen took a turn for the worse. Gonzalez said he is a believer in karma…I think he meant superstition.
