Sean's Bargain Bin 08-11-08

Sean · August 11th, 2008

Let’s see how the ‘bargain bin’ hurlers did last week:

3-3 record, 40 IP, 32 K’s, 4.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 18.06 RH point average.

Season to Date stats: 390 2/3 IP, 28-19 record, 241 K’s, 3.36 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 27.02 RH point avg.

Prediction: a rough estimate of the number of Rotohog points I feel the pitcher will put up.
Break Even #: the number of points the pitcher will need to put up in order to exceed his price.
Value: how much the pitcher is worth, based on my predicted number of points.

Mon. 8/11 – Dave Bush ($5.31), Mil vs. Wsh – Bush is a must-start here against the Nats. Although, he has had a fairly disappointing season, you can’t ignore the fact that he has fairly good at home by sporting a 3.30 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP at Miller Park this year. Prediction: 25.82 points - Break Even #: 15.43 points – Value: $17.61

Tue. 8/12 – Clayton Kershaw ($4.25), LAD vs. Phi – The Dodgers knew that Kershaw was going to develop into a stud over the next couple of seasons, but his 12-6 curveball is already baffling big league hitters. In his 4 starts since the All-Star Break he has gone 2-1 with a cool 2.45 ERA. Prediction: 23.77 points - Break Even #: 14.53 points – Value: $14.46

Wed. 8/13 – Mark Buehrle ($7.25), CHW vs. KC– Buerhle got creamed by the Royals the last time he faced them. Unfortunately he was spotlighted as the ‘Bargain of the Day’ for that start as well. This time Mark should fare better since he’s at home. Prediction: 24.75 points - Break Even #: 17.07 points – Value: $16.34

Thur. 8/14 – Armando Galarraga ($6.89), Det vs. Tor – Galarraga gets to take the mound in a daytime matinee (likely against Roy Halladay). In Armando’s 6 day starts this year he has gone 4-0 with a 1.22 ERA. Prediction: 22.15 points - Break Even #: 16.76 points – Value: $13.27

Fri. 8/15 – Aaron Cook ($9.96), Col @ Wsh – Cook barely qualifies as a true ‘Bargain’ this week and may not dip below $10 again this season. Before he parts I’d like to thank him for all of his quality starts on here (except for last week, WTF Aaron??) and it couldn’t have been possible without me completely over-looking him and making his starting price the bare minimum $3. Prediction: 26.48 points - Break Even #: 19.36 points – Value: $18.39

Sat. 8/16 – Scott Baker ($5.15), Min vs. Sea – The Mariners roughed him up last time, but I see Scott having the upper-hand in this afternoon tilt. You won’t need much ‘dough’ to have this Baker on your team in this favorable matchup. Prediction: 21.14 points - Break Even #: 15.29 points – Value: $12.07

Sat. 8/16 – John Danks ($7.29), CHW @ Oak – This is not a typo. I am recommending 2 pitchers for Saturday because they should both be great plays and because there is nothing but Sunday looks like trash day. Danks has come down to earth a little (5.96 ERA post-all star break), but I think he will be a fine start here against the weak hitting A’s. Prediction: 22.87 points - Break Even #: 17.10 points – Value: $14.12
