If college's start paying

If college's start paying athletes, they're going to think of a way to make that money back. Do you know how they'll most likely do that? Raise tuition. That might not effect some of you, but as a college student, I already have to pay more and more every year for college. If schools have to start paying their athletes, it's going to hit every student's wallet. Prices, that already are astronomical, will go up even more every year than it already does.

some sports make so much money. why are they holding out?
Probably keep people from leaving college early and they probably turn out to be more responsible in the end.

If you listened to EPSN radio yesterday around... 2 pm... they interviewed someone from the NCAA. I can't tell you who it was on ESPN radio or who the NCAA guy was (reliable, I know)... but they asked him this exact question. The guy from the NCAA said that there were only 6 schools in the whole country who operate "in the black" due to their sports programs. In case you don't know what that mean, only 6 schools in the whole country actually MAKE money off their sports teams. All other schools actually lose money or break even. How would a school pay for an athlete when they're not even making money on them? It's not a good idea.

The statistic that only 6 schools make money is a little bit deceiving. That includes the schools' entire athletic programs, including everything from football and basketball to women's crew and field hockey. I guarantee you the number of schools making money off of just the football and basketball programs is MUCH higher and a majority of D1 schools make money off of one, if not both, of these programs.
I don't claim to have the right answer on how star athletes should be compensated, but the fact of the matter is the schools make a ton of money off of the names and likenesses of their star athletes. I can't think of any other industry where a person would not be compensated for this. Athletes should be paid, or at least compensated when their intellectual property is used to sell jerseys, programs, etc.
